New Government smart meter plans

The Government has released plans for every home in Britain to have a smart meter by the end of 2020. Smart meters will allow us to accurately record your gas and electricity use and lets you see how much energy you’re using as you’re using it.

Smart meters will mean an end to estimated bills. They’ll help you to manage your energy usage, which will lead to a reduction in carbon emissions. So you’ll be saving money and helping to save the environment too.

When will meters be changed?

As part of a two-year trial, backed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, we’ve changed over 9,700 meters in the UK since early 2008. We’re the largest participant in the Government-sponsored project which is helping us to understand how to make the most of this new technology in the future.

We’ve been developing our plans in preparation for the roll-out of smart meters, but there’s a lot to do to establish a national framework to support smart meters, so the roll-out won’t start for some time. Installing smart meters in more than 27 million homes in the next 10 years is a huge task for the industry, but we’ll keep you up to date with developments.
