Estimated meter readings
How can I check if my bill is estimated?
You can check if your bill is estimated two ways:
1. On the first page of your bill (directly under your address) you’ll see either a ‘thumbs up’ or a ‘thumbs down’ logo. If your bill has a ‘thumbs down’, this means it’s estimated.
2. Look at the reverse page of your bill. In the section that explains your statement you’ll find two sets of digits. The first digit is your previous reading and the second digit your current reading. You’re billed for the difference between the two. If there’s an (E) after the second set of digits, your bill is estimated.
This example, replicated from an electricity bill, shows that the reading of 12187 (E) for 28 August is an estimate.

What happens when my bill is estimated?
We make your bills as accurate as we can by visiting your property every six months. If you’re not in we’ll try to arrange another visit, but if this doesn’t happen for any reason, we’ll estimate your usage. We may not always get this right; which is why we recommend you always check our estimated readings with your own meter reading. This is in case we’ve estimated too much or little - the last thing we want to happen is for you to be paying us too much or too little (in which case we’d have to send you a catch-up bill).
My bill is estimated - how can I update my account to get an accurate bill?
If you know your bill is estimated and you’d like an accurate bill, all you need to do is to take a reading from your meter and update your account online or by calling our free Meterline number (open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week). You can find our Meterline number on our Phone numbers page. We’ll then send a revised bill to you within 5-7 working days. (Not an online customer? It's easy to register.)
