Special controls and adaptors

There are many special devices and adaptors available which can make it easier for you to use the electrical controls, plugs and switches around your home. These are some of the things available that you may find useful:

Bump-ons – These are self adhesive dots that you can stick onto an appliance to mark settings. For example, different temperatures or wash programmes.

Braille – Some manufacturers offer Braille appliance controls for the blind or partially sighted.

Control handles – These are handles which fit over the top of existing controls making them easier to turn.

Plugs – Some plugs come with handles which makes it easier to plug in and pull out.

Power point raiser – This will move your socket so you can reach it without bending down.

Large rocker switches – These switches are easier for some people to use than usual light switches, as you can nudge them on and off with your elbow or arm.

Touch sensitive controls – These respond to touch but do not need pressure to work them because they detect your body’s warmth.

Switch sticks – You can stick these small plastic levers on to existing light switches making them easier to use.
